US Open 2007 - Cabrera Wins

“I am taking this to my bed. This is going to sleep with me.”
Angel Cabrera’s wife Sylvia will just have to take the couch, the US Open trophy gets the bed.

“My last four majors I’ve finished one, one, two, two - not terrible, but it could have been better.”
Not terrible? Tiger Woods underlines just how much higher his standards are than everybody else’s.

“I like to remember some of the holes I have played this week and forget a couple of them.”
Paul Casey reveals that professional golfers use the same selective memory techniques that keep most amateur golfers coming back for more.

“I had a lot of opportunities, it just didn’t work out.”
Fine player that he is, Jim Furyk will never be the first player golf journalists phone up for a soundbite.

“Coming off the 9th green, I thought that if I can play the back nine in three under I’ve got a chance.”
As it turned out, three under coming home instead of his one over would have taken Nick Dougherty to six over, just one adrift, but his fighting spirit guaranteed him a spot at next year’s Masters and US Open.

“I was exhausted last night after playing with Tiger Woods. I’ve never felt like that.”
The mind boggles but Dougherty did very well on Sunday so who are we to ask questions.

“Why practise out of fairway bunkers? We might as well just throw the ball out and add a shot. I must have been in 25 of them. I don’t think I advanced it more than 30 yards out of any of them.”
Defending champion Geoff Ogilvy bemoans the sand traps that pockmark the Oakmont course - it’s golf Geoff, you’re s’posed to avoid them.
