Open first for Liang and China

Date December 11, 2007

Liang Wenchong will be the first Chinese player to compete at the Open when he lines up at Royal Birkdale next July.
The 29-year-old booked his ticket for the oldest of the world’s four majors by finishing top of the Asian Tour’s order of merit.
Liang was voted the players’ player of the year at the end of an Asian season that included one victory and eight other top-10 finishes. He also claimed the lowest stroke average award with 70.41.
Having led the money list since May, Liang was virtually assured of becoming China’s first Asian number one before the season finale, last week’s Volvo Masters of Asia at the Thai Country Club.
“I’m honoured to be the first Chinese to win this,” said Liang. “This achievement will take me to the next stage, to a new platform.
“This is a new beginning for me, I’ve achieved my first goal.”
Ireland’s Padraig Harrington begins the defence of his title on July 17.
